This review examines not only the current status of the health of the general working population but also uses estimates for the future that are a major cause for concern, for example rising rates in obesity in the general population. Evidence drawn from those unemployed demonstrates the importance to health of work. A healthy workplace is a priority in the search for workplace health and the attitude of employers to sickness is a crucial factor. The economic costs of ill health are quantifiable but the individual costs are not so easily quantified.
