The use of rating scales in bipolar disorders can steer the clinician towards appropriate treatment by helping to establish an accurate diagnosis, grading the severity of the condition by quantifying the degree of impairment and disability, and characterising the nature of the symptoms and impairments to enable treatment plans to be tailored to the individual's needs. The scale is reviewed in this publication are not exhaustive but represent the most relevant contemporary scales used in evaluating bipolar spectrum disorder [at the time of publication: 2006].
