Beware of add on procedures: a cautionary tale of regret following sterilisation

By: Contributor(s): Publication details: 2010Uniform titles:
 • Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Online resources: Summary: The question of jointly performing elective and emergency procedures remains an area of controversy. What may seem to be efficiency can lead to patient complaints and litigation. The risk of regret following sterilisation was significantly increased among women who had the procedure performed in connection with another surgical procedure (Thranov et al. 1988). However, other authors found no evidence that the need to take an urgent decision resulted in more regret (Verkuyl 2002). This dilemma of add-on procedures can be extrapolated to all specialties. We present this case as a reminder of the potential risk of such cases.
