The Nuffield Trust was commissioned by The Royal College of Surgeons of Englandto explore the challenges facing emergency general surgery (EGS) and to identifyopportunities to overcome those challenges. We undertook interviews with experts, arapid assessment of the literature and a novel quantitative analysis. This work fed intoa seminar held in September 2015 that was attended by senior stakeholders acrosssurgery, medicine, anaesthetics, radiology, pre-hospital medicine, advanced nursingand management. This report brings together the findings of our preliminary research, seminar andsubsequent exploration and analysis. It offers practical opportunities to improve theprovision of EGS and provides health care leaders with important points to considerwhen reviewing changes to EGS services.
