The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh which can trace its existence as far back as 1505 has amassed a unique collection of over one hundred oil and water colour paintings and a number of busts. At the core of the collection is a remarkable series of nearly 40 paintings of contemporary surgeons by Sir John Medina and his apprentice William Aikman which were painted around 1700 to 1710.
